When we were looking at homes, the first thing I noticed in the home we eventually bought was the gorgeous, shiny, black, granite countertops flecked with gold, gray, silver and mustard. They were so unique and striking.
When we finally moved in, it took all of three seconds to realize that my beautiful, fancy-schmancy countertops showed every fingerprint, smudge and smear. It was a constant battle to keep it clean and fingerprint free. Actually, it was a losing battle. No matter how much I sprayed and wiped, they always looked hazy and dirty.
From day one I was on a mission to find a cleaner that worked well.
I found a product that worked okay, but it smelled like crap, cost almost $12.00 per bottle and come to find out, was pretty toxic, as many are.
Why make your own granite cleaner
For starters, and most importantly, there are no harmful chemicals in this homemade granite cleaner. Secondly, making your own is much more cost effective. It also takes no time at all.
After doing a little bit of research, the ingredients in the homemade sprays were all pretty similar. They all had water and alcohol in different measurements. You can even use vodka in place of the alcohol. Use a cheap one though. Save the Tito’s for a cocktail. This spray is amazing! It’s a huge money saver and works so much better than those toxic, expensive commercial products.
Granite, stone and marble do not like anything acidic used on them. Citrus and vinegar can cause damage to your beautiful, expensive countertops by causing permanent etching and even water can leave spots and streaks.
I love to use a citrus smelling essential oil. I always use lemon or sweet orange. I just love the vibrant, fresh smell of my home when I use them in my diffuser. Tea tree or bergamot are refreshing green oils and also have antibacterial, antiseptic and germicidal properties. If you don’t use essential oils to scent your spray, you will smell the rubbing alcohol but the smell dissipates almost immediately because the alcohol evaporates so quickly.
If you have granite, marble or stone in your kitchen, I suggest you try this. It only takes a minute to mix up. You’ll love your shiny, beautiful countertops, the huge financial savings and your body will thank you for not exposing it to the harmful chemicals of the toxic, expensive store-bought brands.
